Jr. William E. Lane

d. June 22, 2023

William E. LANE Jr., age 84, passed away on June 22 nd , 2023 at Grace Hospital in Parma with his son, William III, at his side.

William was born on February 5 th , 1939 to the late William Sr. and Olive (nee Stephan) Lane. Mr. Lane was preceded in death by his dear sister, Barbara, and his former wife of 20 years, Patricia.

My father grew up in Parma on Brownfield Drive, attended Incarnate Word Academy, and was a proud 1956 graduate of St. Ignatius High School. My dad joined the enlisted ranks of the Ohio Army National Guard in 1957. In 1966, he was selected to attend Officer Candidate School at Fort Benning, Georgia. He subsequently commanded Company 'B' of the 112 th Engineer Battalion from 1969 to 1974 and considered this to be his most enjoyable time in the Army. Later, he transferred to the Army Reserve where he held a lieutenant colonel slot in a unit providing R&D support to NASA GRC's Jet Propulsion Lab before retiring from military service in 1987. His military decorations include the Army National Guard Components Achievement Medal, Humanitarian Service Medal, and the Ohio Faithful Service Medal. My dad was a graduate of the Command & General Staff College, National Defense University, and the Engineer Officer Basic and Advanced Courses.

In civilian life, my dad was a Central Office Technician at the Ohio Bell Telephone Company for over 20 years and co-owned Pat and Bill's Broadview Tavern in Old Brooklyn. My father was active in martial arts for over 30 years. He attained the rank of 5 th degree black belt in Minna Jiu-Jitsu, serving as chief instructor at the Mayfield Academy of Self-Defense and Karate during the 70's and 80's. His other favorite past times in his younger days included boating and water skiing on Lake Erie, bowling, and going to dances. In recent years, my dad liked to read the Plain Dealer, work in his garden (I'll keep it going, Pop!), and see his friends at Harry's Steak House on Wednesday afternoons. Besides his son, Mr. Lane is survived by his brother-in-law, Emil, his niece and goddaughter Susan, and his nephews, Emil Jr. and Stephen. Rest in peace, Pop! I love you!!
